As we have mentioned previously the Volt is a supremely good open road distance eater. On electricity it is smooth and quiet (although road and wind noise seem more noticeable due to the lack of engine noise to mask them), although on petrol it does get a bit noisier.
The engine noise is often unsettlingly out of sync with the road speed as well, but you soon get used to this.
The ride is firm and can get a bit jittery over broken surfaces, but is generally comfortable and compliant. Passing is a thing of joy, with the electric torque effortlessly surging you past slower traffic.
Fuel use is impressive too, just not as impressively negligible as around town. On a long trip our Volt returned fuel consumption of 5.2L/100km, which is very good for a petrol-powered car of this size anyway, closer to that of a diesel-powered car of similar size.
