With the wonderfully low centre of gravity courtesy of the large central battery pack and the instant torque courtesy of the electric motor, the Volt is actually quite a thing of fun on a winding back road.
While the steering isn’t exactly alive with feel, it is responsive and relatively sharp.
The chassis has a nicely balanced feel to it and darts into corners eagerly. It will eventually understeer when pushed (or when wet), but generally has a pleasantly neutral composure to it.
In the wet the instant torque does become a bit of a liability, but sensible throttle application and the brilliantly calibrated traction control make easily controllable.
There is also a surprising amount of quiet satisfaction to be had punching a car along a winding road in almost complete silence, with only wind noise and the occasional protest from the tortured rubber to break it up.
