The Five most powerful and expensive SUVs you can buy in NZ right now

October 6, 2016

While luxury SUVs have been around for a while now, it is a mark of the SUVs ascendence in sales domination that you can now buy some fairly heavyweight SUVs in terms of price, as well as actual weight. And performance, never forget that.

Today we take a look at the five most expensive, luxurious and outright fast SUVs you can buy in New Zealand right now.

Bentley Bentayga – $398,000

Until the no-doubt stratospherically-priced Rolls-Royce SUV drives, the big Bentley is the absolute top of the tree in terms of SUVs in New Zealand.

With its mighty 447kW/900Nm twin turbo petrol W12 engine it is also easily the most powerful SUV on sale today as well.

Ridiculously luxurious and insanely powerful, but probably really cursed with the kind of looks only the wife of a premiere league footballer could ever really love, the Bentayga is a towering monument to the ongoing struggle between taste and wealth.

Range Rover SV Autobiography LWB – $355,000

While most of the Range RoverAutobiography range could easily fill this entire Sunday Five all by themselves, it is the top tier long wheelbase SV range that really takes the cake.

The top spec LWB V8 gets the mental 405kW/680Nm supercharged petrol V8 from the Range Rover Sport SVR, making it a wonderfully insane blend of uber-luxury and ballistic performance. Utterly irrational, almost entirely pointless and roughy taking up the floor space of a small block of apartments, the top spec LWB Range Rover is a thoroughly fantastic way to travel!

Porsche Cayenne Turbo S – $307,000

Cayenne Turbo S

Range-topping SUV performance rarely comes as focussed of ferocious as the Cayenne Turbo. While the Bentley Bentayga and G63 AMG may have more power, the 419kW/800Nm turbo V8 Porsche is a far, far sharper tool than either the big Brit or the crazy German.

Well, as sharp as a massive, tall SUV can be, that is.

While it is not exactly a 911 through the bends, it is still far, far better around the curves than logic and the laws of physics should suggest it ever be.

Mercedes-AMG G63 – $252,390

September 2015

The oldest of them all and still easily the most completely bonkers, the AMG version of the ancient G-Wagen is a startling and completely pointless thing. And that is why anyone with a soul and a love of petrol-powered things should have nothing but admiration for Mercedes-Benz for allowing it to exist.

Quarter of a million dollars is a lot of money, but we really would struggle to think of a better way to blow it than on an SUV that has been largely unchanged since 1983, except for the fact that someone has jammed a 430kW/760Nm V8 into it…

Range Rover Sport SVR – $233,000

Bellowing, belligerent and utterly over-the-top, the SVR version of the Range Rover Sport gives the mighty Porsche Cayenne Turbo S a run for its money in the handling stakes, if not outright grunt.

That said, while its 405kW/680Nm supercharged V8 is down on the Cayenne’s power, it has a completely insane character that leaves the clinical German sounding a bit subdued and polite.

Forget that whole repressed, stiff upper lip Brit thing, the Range Rover Sport SVR is way more Ozzy Osbourne than Basil Fawlty.
