I am absolutely certain that it is no coincidence that the 1973 Ford Falcon XB GT features in Forza Motorsport 4. Aside from being my dream car when I was 10 years old, it is almost identical to Aussie actor Eric Bana’s ‘74 variety that was the basis of his awesomely brilliant 2009 documentary Love the Beast.
The doco is a celebration of the love we – that is petrolheads – feel for cars and features a scene where Bana and Top Gear’s Jeremy Clarkson talk about the idea that non-car people simply don’t understand, because they can’t see the soul behind the engineering. And it’s true.
It’s a theory that Clarkson himself expands upon in the opening sequence of Forza Motorsport 4, and it sums up perfectly what makes this game so damn brilliant for the true car fan – it is made by people who get it…
Okay, sure, the graphics are brilliant and – most importantly – the handling physics are stunning, but what really makes Forza 4 great is the line up of cars available.
Finally we have a game that understands that it doesn’t have to be all European supercars. Or tunable Japanese hatches. Or American muscle cars. It can, in fact, be a mighty fine selection of all of those cars and many, many more.
Forza 4 is developer Turn 10’s attempt to create the world’s best and most comprehensive racing sim, one that can appeal to casual video game racing fans through to hardcore realistic sim fans alike. And it has worked magnificently.
Whatever your skill level, Forza 4 can be adjusted to suit. Game progression has been adjusted for the new installment to make it easier to race the cars you like and not be forced into racing the ones that don’t do it for you, and this too works brilliantly.
Brilliant is really the best word to describe Forza Motorsport 4: brilliant graphics, brilliant physics, brilliant car selection, brilliant sound. Get this game, get a steering wheel, get a big TV and crank it up LOUD. Simply brilliant…
