Next week Oversteer will be off on a massive road trip of thoroughly epic proportions! Well… going on holiday in the South Island with my mum…
Anyway, our ride will be a Hyundai i40 Elite wagon, filled with bells and whistles and a 1.7-litre turbo diesel engine. We will be posting regular updates on the car and the trip here and on our Facebook page, plus the usual flurry of nonsense on Twitter.
You can also catch a more sensible, serious motoring journalist version of events on the NZ Company Vehicle Facebook page, which you can find here!
The plan so far:
Friday the 13th (Ooohhh…): Head out of Auckland to Otorohanga and pick up the Old Girl. The trip to Queenstown WAS her birthday present after all, so better take her…
Saturday the 14th: Otorohanga to Wellington. Resist the urge to speed on what will no doubt be the most heavily policed part of the trip. Stay the night in Wellington and catch the ferry across Cook Strait early Sunday morning. Reserve the decision on breakfast until I see the conditions…
Sunday the 15th: Picton to possibly Kaikoura. Things get a bit vague here. Gonna play it a bit fast and loose and see where we end up. Hopefully not jail.
Monday the 16th: Wherever to Oamaru. Visit friend, ex-employer and founder of the Legendary Driver Magazine Allan Dick. Well… kind of. He will be in Auckland, so will visit his lovely wife Keri instead… Apparently the Christchurch Wizard lives here now. With his mother. I don’t know why I bring that up. It just seems cool…
Tuesday the 17th: Oamaru to Queenstown. Not a biggie. Hopefully the hotel won’t be crap.
Wednesday the 18th to Saturday the 21st: Swear a lot because I have badly organised this trip to coincide with the ITM 400 V8 Supercar race in Hamilton, then bugger about in Queenstown and the surrounding areas. Try not to drink too much. If the weather is shit, then the opposite applies.
Saturday the 21st: Queenstown to somewhere on the west coast. Again, not sure where… which is fine, because I’m pretty certain that’s how the locals navigate the west coast of the South Island.
Sunday the 22nd: Probably Picton to Wellington. Not sure. Haven’t booked ferry…
Monday the 23rd: Hopefully Wellington to Otorohanga, then maybe Auckland. Depending on how I feel. Maybe… probably not.
So, as you can see, it is a meticulously planned trip that has no room for error or unplanned disasters. Oh… wait…
Well… at least there is plenty of comedy potential! Watch here, here, here and here as the trip unfolds. Or self-destructs.
