Toyota FT50 launched

October 23, 2014

Toyota racing New Zealand last week launched its new car for the Toyota Racing Series – the FT50.

The FT50 has been designed and constructed by Tatuus in Italy to meet current FIA safety standards with front and rear impact crash structures, driver cockpit head protection and wheel tethers to secure the suspension to the car in the event of a crash. Inside the cockpit a lift out safety seat is fitted under the driver’s custom seat insert, enabling rescue crews to extract the driver with minimal disturbance in the event of a crash.

While the FT50 carries over the venerable Toyota 2ZZ-GE 160kW 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that has been used in the championship since its inception in 2005, that is the only part of the car that hasn’t been changed or completely redesigned. The engine does feature a new exhaust, however, as well as a new transmission; a six speed Sadev transaxle with integrated limited slip differential.
