A few thoughts on the Volt as a daily commuter

January 5, 2014

In heavy traffic the Volt is, rather obviously, a dream to live with. Super smooth, instantaneous throttle response and with no clutch to worry about it is happy to glide smoothly and silently along at whatever speed the traffic is flowing at.

It is a monster away from the traffic lights too, with all that torque available from virtually a standstill.

Plus there is something extraordinarily satisfying about sitting stationary in a long queue of traffic knowing you are using literally no petrol. And hardly any electricity either as all it is powering while you are sitting there is the stereo, HVAC system and the various lights scattered about the place. Smugness in heavy traffic, thy name is Volt.

The 60km range is more than enough for the average commute and I personally have found it to be just perfect for the amount of mileage I do in an average day. I can get to the office, do a bit of running round during the day and get home again with usually between 5 and 10km left showing on the battery.

Of course, for those days where you have to go a bit further, then the petrol engine is there as a nice peace of mind back up.
