Still put out by the fact that you DIDN’T have a spare US$4.62 million lying around to nab the original George Barris TV Batmobile? Well, this may be of some consolation to you – in a strict, technical sense, the car Barris created out of a Lincoln concept wasn’t Batman’s first real-world ride.
That honour goes to a car that has just popped up for sale on Ebay at a far more reasonable US$19,800!
Built by its original owner between 1961 and 1963, the “original” Batmobile used an Oldsmobile chassis, a 350ci V8 and a custom fibreglass body. In 1964 (two years before the Barris car appeared) All Star Dairies spotted the car and approached the owner to hire it to them for two years in order to promote its range of Batman-themed dairy products. Making this the first official real-world Batmobile.
The car hasn’t quite been as well looked after as the Barris Batmobile, however, and is in need of a complete restoration. It is all in one piece though and comes complete with an extensive collection of Batman-themed All Stars Daries memorabilia.
You will need to be quick if you want it though, there are only three days left on the auction. Although, rather amazingly, no one has bid on it yet…
