When Subaru NZ announced that its version of the result of the joint venture between Subaru and Toyota – the BRZ/GT86 twins – would go on sale in New Zealand, head man Wallis Dumper also announced a limited run of 12 special launch models, that would be available on the 12th of December (12 cars available 12/12/12 – geddit?) and would come with a bonus three year service plan, personalised Euro style number plate and an exclusive track day experience.
Subaru offered the cars to its existing customers first, via the internet, and the response has en enthusiastic to say the least.
“The response took us by surprise as 8 units were snapped up within 6 hours” said Dumper.
The remaining four cars will now be available to the general public at www.brz.co.nz where they can choose their colour and personalised euro plate preference, and pay a $1200 deposit to secure one of the twelve units due in December.
However, a final price has not been agreed upon between Subaru New Zealand and Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI the maker of Subaru vehicles), but Subaru New Zealand has indicated that it would be below $60,000.
The BRZ has been selling strongly in Japan and has been attracting much praise from worldwide motoring media. It features a 147 kW boxer engine, 17 inch alloy wheels, a limited slip differential, Xenon headlights, an engine immobilizer, ventilated disc brakes on all wheels, Vehicle Dynamics Control, cruise control and dual zone climate air conditioning.
If you are not quick enough, or need to save for a bit first, fear not! Further shipments of the BRZ will be available in 2013.
