Baird sets Highlands lap record

Just the thing for a lazy Easter weekend – watch Craig Baird set the lap record – 1 minute 41.9 seconds – at the opening of the awesome Highlands Motorsport Park in Cromwell.

Baird is driving a McLaren MP4-12C purchased by Highlands’ owner, Tony Quinn, specially to set the first lap record. The whole thing oozes Kiwi appropriateness, with the car being a McLaren, Baird being New Zealand’s winningest (hate that word, but there you go…) driver and Highlands’ being just amazing, it is one big bundle of Kiwi awesomeness.

Baird once provided me with my favourite quote ever from someone I interviewed when, after I asked him about his intense competitiveness, he said “Mate, I would rather chew off my own fingers than let the guy behind pass me”. With an attitude like that, who could be better to set the first lap record at the country’s newest and best motorsport facility? Enjoy!
